Dr. Magaly Toro recently joined JIFSAN from the University of Chile. She received her Ph.D. in Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland in 2014. From 2014 to 2015, she was an ORISE fellow at the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, where she conducted research in the genomics of foodborne pathogens. Dr. Toro started as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA) at the University of Chile in 2015 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. She has led diverse research projects on food safety, molecular analysis of foodborne pathogens, and evaluations for good manufacturing practices in the food service area. She has collaborated with industry and government agencies. Dr. Toro has authored over 30 scientific publications and advised undergraduate and graduate students. At JIFSAN, Dr. Toro will oversee the food safety laboratory and continue to conduct research in food safety and public health.
