JIFSAN has continued the focus on fresh produce safety training in Mexico with the delivery of
two Train the Trainer Programs for the US-FDA Produce Safety Rule. Collaborators for both
programs included the Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), the
Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (SENASICA), and the
US-FDA Latin American Office. In addition, each program included the participation of a
University as a collaborating partner. Several faculty members from each institution attended
and made valuable contributions. The first program was delivered in Guadalajara December 09-
13, 2019 with participation from the Universidad de Guadalajara. There were 61 trainees. The
second program was delivered in Puebla February 24-28 with participation from Benemérita
Universidad Autónoma de Puebla and there were 60 trainees. Both programs were focused on
the Spanish-language delivery of the PSR TTT materials developed by the Produce Safety
Alliance (PSA), which is a partner with JIFSAN in the Produce International Partnership (PIP).
The program also included presentations from US-FDA on FSMA Rules and overviews from
IICA and SENASICA on food safety programming in the country and region. After completion of
each program, participants were positioned to apply for the qualification of Lead Trainer (LT)
with the PSA. Finally, each program included the evaluation of one candidate for the
qualification of PSA Trainer of Trainers (ToT). Feedback from participants during the program
and subsequent written evaluations all indicated that the objectives of the training programs
were met.
